Find Your Birth Family

Adopted adults and parents now have more access than ever to information from  birth and adoption records.

Ontario’s new adoption information disclosure legislation allows:

  • Adopted adults to apply for copies of adoption orders and birth registrations
  • Birth parents to apply for information from adoption orders and birth registrations

The legislation is being implemented in phases and is only applicable to adoptions registered in Ontario.

About The Access To Adoption Records Act

The Access to Adoption Records Act, 2008 (AARA) allows for more open access to original birth registrations and adoption records. The new legislation strives to balance the right to information and the rights of adopted adults and birth parents who wish to protect their privacy. The service is overseen by the Ministry of Community and Social Services
